Fixing a hole...

Work crews are tearing a hole in the narrow street right in front of our house; the neighbors across the street are having a problem with sewage draining.  Part of the crew thinks the pipe does not have enough slope; part of the crew thinks the pipe is blocked with roots; not sure which portion of the crew doesn't have a clue.

Apparently, the problem has been going on for several weeks.  When we heard all the commotion, we looked to be sure we could get our truck out... the fun part: they are working feet (maybe inches) from our truck and cargo trailer!!  Pretty sure "highly skilled" doesn't apply here.

Joan was getting ready to head to the store, while I was studying for updating my CPR and first aid certificates... CRASH!  No, it wasn't them running into our truck or trailer... the dirt they had piled into a gooseneck trailer to haul off was all towards the back of that trailer... seems someone forgot to put a pin in the trailer to keep it from tilting.  It came to rest inches from our trailer, completely blocking in our truck.  Joan was in the truck at the time.  She told them, "No hurry on my part - do what you have to do to be safe."

One must remember where we are... saying, "No hurry..." around here means you are OK if it NEVER gets done.  No matter, other residents on our street were trying to get to or from their homes - it was going to have to get moved.

They tried pushing on it with the front end loader.  It didn't move.  They tried lifting it with the front end loader.  Nope.  So, to clear a narrow path in the road, they simply DRUG it, with the truck pulling the up-ended trailer... picture a dog dragging its butt across the carpet.  Only, instead of a shit stain, they are tearing up more of the road!  Yes, really...

That post with the line tied to it is marking the edge of our driveway/parking.  That post with the red is the tongue jack on our cargo trailer.  It was CLOSE.

With the trailer drug out of the way (still in the flipped open position), traffic could get by; barely.  Joan got out.  This is what the hole now looks like...

So far, no determination of the cause or repair.  I don't think we'll be parking in our own driveway for a while.

Hi Bill. Surprisingly, the hole had been filled when we got back from visiting our friends Herb and Wilma tonight. Of course, it may be months before they get the road resurfaced there... BUT, it is right in front of the home of one of the Homeowner Association Board of Directors. ;-)
