Out Cattle Pass...

Another great day of whale watching.  L-Pod this time, and they were on the southwest side of San Juan Island, in Haro Strait.  Great weather once again, I expected a lot of boats out there... not the case.  There were some transient whales west of Victoria and some of J-Pod in Rosario Strait - obviously dividing up the whale watch boats.

South out of Friday Harbor, down San Juan Channel, and out Cattle Pass.  A look at the lighthouse at the pass, with Mount Baker in the background...

Haro Strait was nearly calm - a great day to be on the water!  We started our viewing with a group that was around False Bay, then worked our way south.  There were only 2 other boats where we started, 4 more around the middle, and by the end of our viewing, we were the only whale watch boat with that group.  Some of the views...

We use the shape of the dorsal fin and the saddle patch (the light area behind the fin) to identify which whales we are viewing.  Here's a closer look...

When you see this, you know a whale has changed direction and is coming at you...

Almost backlit..

The Olympic Mountains in the background...

Continuing with our (non-typical) social ways, after work, we had supper with our friends (and the former owners of the whale watch business), Bill and Colleen.  Good food and entertaining conversation.  They originally offered us the jobs here, and we have become good friends.

Coming into our days off...
