A relaxing morning; breakfast out, some kickback time in the cockpit. Around noon, we headed out on the scoots. Joan hasn't been to Roche Harbor yet this season, other than a drive-by; she suggested lunch there and I suggested a walk around the docks. Yes, I work over there once or twice a week, but I don't have time to walk the docks and check out the boats.
The walk from our dock to shore got pretty steep, thanks to the extremely low tide...
Yep, that is a long ways down. And looking towards the marina office building...
The water is usually right up to the greenery; those rocks are normally covered with water.
We uncovered the scoots and headed out...
A stop on the west side to check out the water...
And then on to Roche...

Roche Harbor used to my my favorite marina stop in the San Juans when we cruised here; working there changes your perspective. However, the vibe is definitely different on a Monday afternoon than on the weekend. Joan did a little looking in the shops, then we walked the docks...
Lots of big boats here, most of the unoccupied... but cleaning crews working on them...

We had lunch at the restaurant out on the patio. A view of the boat I drive there coming in from a trip...
Then, more riding...
Of course, a run past False Bay (Joan's favorite stretch on this island), then back to Friday Harbor; the closest thing we had to traffic today...

While fueling up, a guy on the other side of the gas pump (filling a small SUV) poked his head around and said, "Can I ask you about those?"
"Ask away."
"They look like fun. Are they safe on the road?"
Obviously not a rider. "Yes, they are fun. Unlike the little rental mopeds around here, these are highway capable, so, yes they are safe."
"Do they have an automatic transmission?"
I didn't go into a lot of detail about CVT: "No shifting. Twist the throttle and go. Easy and fun."
He came over for a closer look. "Who makes these?"
"They are Hondas."
He said, "The paint is SO nice. I like the red."
"Me, too. Oh, and 100 miles per gallon - everyone wants to know."
"Ohhhhhhhh."
He waited for us to pull away before he pulled out. I could see him in the rear view mirror, watching us. Maybe we made another scooter convert today? ;-)

Hello Capt. Jim, My wife And I are making our first trip to the San Juan Islands in September. I bet it's a great place to ride scooters. I'm in Atlanta and own a 2004 Jonway Galaxy 150cc and love it. Would be a great ride for the San Juan's.
