Let's see how we feel in the morning...

That was the plan.  No, it wasn't a detailed plan.

We (and by "we" I mean: me) were thinking a day off the island would be nice for a change.  The choices: Orcas Island, Lopez Island, or "to America" (the mainland)... it just depended on when we got up and how we felt about motating.

Morning came, and I voted for America; Joan abstained... America it is.  After cleaning up, I got the scoots out while Joan finished up in the motorhome; here's how our site looks in the morning light...

We planned for breakfast in Anacortes, and headed to the ferry landing with empty bellies.  At the landing...

When the ferry came in, I was surprised to see 3 cattle trucks (empty) roll off - Joan said, "Hey, isn't your latest scooter tag with a semi?"

Yeah!  I grabbed a shot...

We visited for a bit with a nice gentleman on a Kawasaki Concours - found out he is the insurance man who handles our boss's commercial policies.  It's a small island.  Well, the island is a decent size, but not a huge population - most residents here know (or know of) each other.  We also found out that he is heading to the mainland because his daughter-in-law is going to give birth at any moment, to his first grandchild.

Loaded on the ferry...

Yep, front of the line.  An early departure, so trucks heading off the island came rolling on...

While they loaded the line of cars, I took a photo back towards our dock...

This is one of the commercial docks; our boats are the 2nd and 3rd from the left.  That photo is with a wide angle setting from the deck of the ferry... yep, close.

And, we're off...

I really enjoy the views as we head towards the mainland - the silhouettes, the islands, the sparkly water...

After docking at the ferry landing in Anacortes, we were the first ones off.  I stopped at the ticket booth, since there was no line (they were already in, waiting to board the ferry we just left), and bought a multi-pass for the scoots... that gets the cost per trip down to about a buck more than just walking on the ferry.

Joan said, "No McDonald's for breakfast," so we went for a real sit-down... fill the bellies and let the temp warm up a bit.

Then, off for some riding.  It was a unanimous decision for the twisty road that runs past Chuckanut Bay.  Here's something we haven't seen for over a month: a 4 lane highway...

We turned north onto the 2 lane, and within a few minutes came across a group of classic cars coming at us.  I stopped in time to catch this Avanti...

Heading for the best part of the road...

The twisties...

We stopped in Fairhaven, and walked around a bit.  I was thinking I might walk off the big breakfast and be ready for lunch... nope, not yet.

Back on the scoots and back on the road...

A couple stops for some potential future scooter tags...

Check out this boat being built...

Pretty impressive.

Back to the highway...

And back to Anacortes in time for a late lunch, a lap through Safeway to get some things we can't get on the island, then out to the ferry landing... and to the front of the line, with very little wait for the 22 mile ferry ride back to San Juan Island.

A bit of a whirlwind, but some nice riding and a change of pace.

There are places where the summer climate is quite moderate... the San Juan Islands would be one of those places. The weather weasels are predicting highs around 80º by this weekend. We'll see. I may sound like a broken record, too, but this is a great summer climate. Gorgeous scenery. Oh, and did I mention the whales?? ;-)

We have run the heat almost every night that we've been here, so far. We wore jackets while riding all day today. Local folks were in t-shirts and shorts. Other riders we saw today were in jackets. Around 70º for a high today. It doesn't suck.
