So, what do you do on a day off?

Today, I worked.  The boss needed someone to take his trip so he could address other work issues... I didn't particularly want to, but we need to have each other's back.

Joan told me it would be a good trip - she was absolutely right.  It was a private charter she booked, and she said the people would be "a lot of fun."  She was absolutely right.  They were a group who had been friends since college... I said, "So, this is like The Big Chill on a boat?"  They thought that was hysterical; my young first mate/naturalist Alex had never heard of that movie.  They thought that was even funnier.  I let them know that young Alex was a delight to have on the boat and would be able to "amaze them with her vast knowledge."

She did.

We ran to Turn Point on Stuart Island to get to the whales.  We started with some of J-Pod; ran north with them to almost Pender Bluffs on North Pender Island... then went south to catch up with K-Pod who was following almost the same track.  The morning had been windy, from the south.  There were some whales reported to the south, but I was happy to have a northern option.  Our ride was good.  The viewing was very nice...

The silhouettes, looking northwest...

The view of the water, from the bow...

There was some overcast, and some breeze... but, it was a lovely day.  Yes, the whales were great, but this group was simply a fun bunch.  When I had the boat shut down so they could hear as well as see the whales, they were enthusiastic; asked great questions.

If a guy has to work on what should be a day off, this is a nice way for it to play out.
