RIP Cory Wells...

Cory Wells passed today.  He was one of the lead singers for the band Three Dog Night.  I still play some Three Dog Night songs.  Their music was definitely an influence for me.

I saw them for the first time in 1969 in Dallas.  Wells sang "Try a Little Tenderness," a version that took my breath away.  Side note: it was also the very first song Joan and I danced to.

Three Dog Night had three lead singers, great harmonies, and soulful melodies.  During the late 60s and into the 70s, they had 21 Top 40 hits; by any measure, a real force in the music industry.  Because they didn't write most of their songs, some critics didn't give them much credence (they have not been inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame).

We saw them a few times in the 80s... smaller venues, same great music.

RIP Cory Wells.

Jim, Three Dog Night was one of my favorite bands growing up in San Fernando Valley. Oh how I wanted to go see them live. Had posters hanging on my wall of them. Right before I turned 16 and getting my drivers license the band broke up. I was crushed never to see Three Dog Night live. That was early 70's. Two years ago, they were back on tour and played at a casino outside Santa Barbara and told my wife "We are going". We did and had such a wonderful time singing along to all there songs. The last song they played was "Momma Told Me Not To Come" and in the middle of it they stopped and played a hip hop version then back to the original version. Not that I'm into hip hop but even "Momma Told Me Not To Come" sounded great. I so glad that I finally got a chance to see them. RIP Cory Wells.

Hi Wayne - nice to hear from you! People of (ahem) an age who were touched by the music of the 60s and 70s likely have a favorite Three Dog Night song. They did songs that were written by many up and coming artists/songwriters - "Momma Told Me Not To Come" was written by Randy Newman. Great song; it has been covered by many artists, but I like 3DN's version the best.

Glad you got to see them. I think they were one of the best bands of that era.
