Let's pack a picnic lunch...

Beautiful weather on a day off.  We have talked about taking a picnic lunch down to South Beach - today is the day.

I've posted photos of South Beach before - it is a rocky shoreline, not a sandy beach.  Still, a great place to sit, listen to the waves come onto the shore, and take in the beauty of the water and the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

We picked out a spot and got set up...

Joan doesn't do anything half-way...

Her picnic basket has a tablecloth, napkins, silverware, glasses - and the food options: cheese curds, slices of Jarlsburg cheese, bleu cheese for me, steak (already sliced), olives, tomatoes, crackers, pepperoni, and chocolate for dessert.  Wine for her, the hard stuff (Diet Coke) for me.

The "table" is a couple large pieces of driftwood, stacked.  Dining with a view...

Relaxing after lunch...

No, it wasn't chilly; I didn't bring a cap, so I put the hood on for some shade on my forehead.  Great way to unwind on our first day off this week.

We made a couple stops before heading home: to the other side of the island (not far, since this is the skinniest part as you head down towards Cattle Point).  Down the path to Fourth of July Beach...

A nice view with Mt. Baker in the background, where the path opened to the beach...

A rocky beach once again, but a more gradual slope to the water.  More protected, too...

We drove up the west side.  Looking back towards Discovery Island (off Vancouver Island, BC)...

That is a layer of fog around the island.

A seaplane flying by...

Joan taking in the views...

Nice way to spend a day off.
