Applying for a job...
No, not us. This time, we were on the other side.
During our working years, we agonized over hiring staff. You spend a lot of time with your work mates, you want to make sure everybody meshes. Today, Joan and I were two of the three people who were interviewing 12 year olds. No, we're not violating any child labor laws. The kids are students in Steph and Dan's classes, and they are looking for positions like hallway usher, classroom greeter, and math, science, and social studies demonstrators. There is an open house; kids in the next lower grade and their parents get a preview of what they will be doing next year.
Instead of just selecting from the volunteers, the teachers decided to make this a life-experience learning situation.
Each kid had to fill out an application ahead of time and get two references... then, be interviewed by the panel of 3 adults (us). They were told to dress like they were applying for a real job. There were some "rehearsed" answers, but the kids were a delight. Now, that may have been because the 24 kids we interviewed are the ones looking to do volunteer jobs (more likely the go-getters).
Think: American Idol. Joan was J-Lo. The other interviewer, Robert (the manager of a Game Stop store) was Keith Urban. Making me Harry Connick, Jr. I'm OK with that, as long as I don't have to be Simon Cowell. ;-) We were on our best behavior for the kids.
The teachers had pizza for the interviewers when we were done. Still too sore to enjoy that kind of meal. And, on the dental front, I got a call from the dentist's office on our way to school - they were just checking up to see how I was doing. Very nice of them.

Hang up and drive!!
Just remembered this... driving to school today, we passed a guy... an older guy, who was on his cell phone... while riding a bicycle... and wandering in and out of the bike lane. Seems that it isn't just car drivers who are distracted by their cell phones. ;-)
Maybe I should have made that: Hang up and ride!
