In the past, I have made it a point to talk about "a 3-state day" when we're traveling. Or, a 3-day state when going across Texas. ;-)
"Wow, you must have really been moving, Jim!" Pretty much doing the speed limit in the RoadTrek. On Interstate 15 in Utah, there are stretches that have an 80 mph speed limit. What I'm talking about is as we got to the east side of Utah, where it borders Wyoming on I-80. Today, heading to Afton, Wyoming, we left Utah, drove into Wyoming, turned north and back into Utah, then east into Wyoming, then back into Utah, caught a little piece of Idaho, then back into Wyoming. All in about 330 miles of traveling. OK, three different states, but a total of 7 state border crossings.
Which means Murphy got to add 3 more states to his "travel map." He's doing pretty good for a young fella. For us, getting to Afton, WY, means we only have 100 miles or so to do tomorrow to get to Grand Teton National Park (our main destination this trip).
We got up, showered, I took Murphy for some outdoor time...
We decided not to make breakfast since there is an Arby's right there at the Love's Travel Stop. And we're rolling.
I always enjoy driving through Utah, especially on the back roads - lots of agriculture in the valleys between the mountains. And, it was great road, with very light traffic...
We were on I-80 for a short stretch, turned off at Provo to take the roads around the east side of Salt Lake City - far more scenic...
A beautiful reservoir near Heber City...
Condos near Park City and Deer Valley...
Another short stretch on I-80 into Evanston, WY, then north on back roads. And, more road construction...
The mountains were getting closer, the valleys more narrow, and the in and out of the various states...
That orange topper on the road edge posts (above) - do you know what that's all about? If you said, "It is so the snow plows can find the edge of the road when the snow is deeper than the height of the posts," you get 10 bonus points. Not much traffic...
Around 3:30, we pulled into Kodiak Mountain Resort near Afton, WY, our stop for the night. They have cabins and RV sites. We'll have time to stop for groceries and some touristing around Jackson tomorrow before heading to the park.
The RV sites in this resort have concrete pads with grassy areas between. Murphy was happy to get some time on the patio. Full hook-ups make me happy: we will leave here tomorrow with full fresh water and empty gray and black holding tanks.
Our first couple nights in the park will be "dry camping": i.e. no hook-ups. The lithium batteries, solar panels, and big inverter can handle our power needs; having our own supply of fresh water for drinking, cooking, and bathing means we aren't really "camping." Looking at the weather forecast, we won't likely need air conditioning, but we'll need to run some heat at night. Life in the mountains is very different from life in the desert.
