Three State Day...

Well, that was pretty easy to do: we were near the Kansas/Oklahoma border last night, so we left Kansas and crossed into Oklahoma within a few miles.  We are rolling south - through the Panhandle part of Oklahoma, which is only about 35 miles from north to south...

Then, into Texas...

If we were heading directly home, this would be a... three day state: it would take us three days, at our current pace to get to the Tropical Tip.  But, we are not going straight home... we'll do an overnight somewhere along the way, then spend a few days in Texas Hill Country, before heading to the Tropical Tip.

First order of business after 9:00 local: call our son-in-law Dan to wish him a happy birthday!  This part of the state is sparsely populated, so we lost the cell signal a few times, but it was great to visit with him this morning.

Cell coverage was spotty - not much population in this part of the country.  On the bright side, the roads were good... to the point I even said, "Wow, these are good roads!"

Never should have said that.  The last 4 hours or so were Bump City... well, without the "city" part.  Federal Highway 83.  Texas is good about providing roadside parks, though...

Well, not much of a park, but it is a place to pull over, and we bring our own potty with us.  This was still in the "good roads" section...

The wind kicked up earlier today - it was predicted to be 10 to 15 out of the southeast... more like 25...

You can tell by that tree that it is always windy here!  We ran into some road construction...

Looking at those signs, I though I was supposed to drive on two wheels; not easy to do when double towing.  At least the uneven lanes were smooth.  Plus, some "whoop-de-doos"...

As you can see in the photo above, the ground cover is aware that it is autumn.  Some of the trees are starting to change...

To remind you that you are in Texas, there is the low scrubby stuff, too...

Far enough south (even though we are about 800 miles north of home) to see plenty of fields of cotton...

The green ground cover in this area was bright...

If we could have done the miles, we would have gone straight through to the Hill Country... but, with the double towing and the frequent stops, about 300+ miles is what I have in me.  The temp is climbing into the 80s and increasing humidity.  We stopped for fuel and lunch, and found a shady area to park and eat.  After that was when the road turned crappy.

We had several options for where we might stop for the night... one of them is a free city-run RV parking area in Hamlin, TX.  Looking at photos of the place on-line, it isn't fancy... heck, it isn't really an RV park - more of a parking area that has hook-ups.  It is right along our route, so we stopped to check it out...

There is parking for a dozen or so rigs, but there is only one other RV here... and it looks like it hasn't moved in a long time.  We read that the local Police patrol the area, and it is right along the main drag.  Frankly, it is quite adequate, and free is my favorite price.  Yes, we could pull into a Walmart (if there was a Walmart along this route) or a truck stop, but it is going to be warm tonight, and we want electricity so we can run the air conditioning.  I took Izzy for a short walk, but she seemed determined to find the "stickery" (not sure if that is a word) grass/weeds.  When the sun goes down, I'll try walking her again, staying more on the gravel.  Home, sweet home for the night...

In Hill Country, we made reservations for an RV resort - it won't be cheap (or free), but it will have all the amenities.  For tonight, this will be just fine.

WHAT?!?!? All those miles and Oklahoma gets 35?!?!? Bad route planning Jim! Gotta get eastern or at least central Oklahoma in the mix!!!

Ah, Mark, we have been through central and eastern OK many times. Our plan this trip was straight south from the Black Hills, staying on two-lane roads as much as possible. Haven't driven this stretch of road before... a change of pace. For us, this trip, good route planning.
