Waffle House...

I had proposed breakfast at Waffle House today last night with Steph and Dan.  So, this morning, we were off to the second closest Waffle House.  I've made the joke before that "Denny's is for people who like Waffle House, but don't know how to fight."  This particular Waffle House is what I would call... upscale.  Well, the Waffle House itself is pretty much like every other Waffle House, but it is in a nicer retail area.  And, I didn't feel like a fight would break out in the parking lot at any moment.  ;-)

There was a wait for a booth, but it was worth the wait.  One other upscale thing about Waffle House in general: a bit of sticker shock when the waitress gave us the bill... about $85 with the tip.  (A 50¢ per egg surcharge, by the way.)  That said, we all agreed it was a tasty meal, and plenty of food.

It set the tone for a good day.

I've never been to a Waffle House. There are none in this neck of the woods. I heard about the egg surcharge, which would not affect me much. My "one omelet per year" rule while traveling works OK. if I eat eggs at all it is likely at a hotel breakfast bar on the road.

When I was nine we moved to a country house my parents bought and soon got 150 chickens as peeps. Being the oldest boy, it was my job to care for them and the horses. I was in my 30's before I could eat chicken or eggs again. Now ask me how I really feel...

Hi Earl. Waffle House is more than waffles and eggs. According to them, they serve more steaks than any other restaurant. I learned about Waffle House when I was playing in a band. They were open 24 hours and had better food than a typical truck stop... and, like an army, a band travels on its stomach. Joan's first exposure to WH was when we once flew into the Florida Keys and got to a hotel late - we were hungry and there was a WH right next door. She said, "I don't want waffles," and I explained to her that it is MUCH more than waffles. My go-to is the Texas cheese-steak and bacon sandwich... and their hashbrowns are still the best I've ever had, and can be adorned with cheese, chili, an egg, etc. When it happens that you can get a seat at the counter (not great for conversation with 4 of us), you get "dinner and a show" - watching them prepare the food is impressive. It's where I learned some of my griddling skills. ;-)

You should give one a try some time. It might make you have fonder memories of your childhood as a peep wrangler. ;-)

Good to know. I will now make it a point to try WH if I ever run across one. There are none in Idaho to my knowledge.

I like waffle house, but not at $85. I hope you both had steak and lobster for that price. I doubt I've ever paid $30 at waffle house and I order a big breakfast.
