Peace and quiet here in Blind Bay. We decided to get the kayaks down and check out the store at the ferry landing on Shaw Island. Heading out...
Looking at the clouds, I am expecting a change in the weather. We paddled into a light north wind as we made our way to the ferry landing. Here we are at the mall on Shaw...
The general store on Shaw is like stepping back in time. At the back of the store, we remembered the ice cream shop... it's still there. It was early afternoon, and we both felt more like lunch than ice cream - you could get your choice of 5 or 6 different sandwiches. I can attest: fresh and tasty!
We looked around the store, but couldn't find anything we really needed now that our bellies were full. There is a small park by the ferry parking, with a view of the bay...
We visited with some other kayakers who had pulled up on the shore where we left our kayaks (the dock at Shaw looked like you'd come away from there with a butt full of slivers if you tried to get on there from a kayak)... they had just paddled their way here from Jones Island; they asked about us... "Oh, no, our boat is anchored just around the corner in the bay, and that's about as far as either of us have in us today."
I wasn't in a hurry to get back to the boat, because I knew what was waiting for us there: one of us (and I'm not mentioning her name) said, "The boat needs to be scrubbed. It is nasty along the waterline." Frankly, I was more concerned with what is growing on the bottom of the hull.
We got back to the boat, each got a scrub brush, and went after it. The waterline cleaned up pretty good... well, anything is better than that nasty greenish/brown science experiment. Part way into the scrubbing, the wind kicked up, making the holding-while-scrubbing-from-the-kayaks more of an aerobic exercise.
I had just finished scrubbing what I could reach with the short handled brush when I saw a C-Dory heading our way... Harvey on Sleepy-C. We visited for a bit. I suggested he put out an anchor, but he was looking for some dock space. "Friday Harbor is completely full," he said.
"Well, I know a slip there that isn't being used tonight." We told him he could take ours. We visited for a bit, and Harvey headed out. The wind had been steadily coming up, and now it was out of the south... looks like our Delta anchor reset itself with that 180º wind switch. We thought about leaving the kayaks down and using them again tomorrow, but decided to heft 'em back up on top. About the time we finished that chore, the wind settled down to about 10 mph. Of course.
This bay is open to the north, but not a lot of fetch. Still, with the building southerly wind, more boats have found their way in here for the evening.
