We have been RVing a lot of years. That trek across west Texas seems to go on forever. That last time we made it the 550 miles across west Texas without stopping for the night was in our motorhoming days. If we had to, we could eat up 700 miles in a day - not so hard to do when you have a 1200+ mile range for fuel and the ability to cook and potty while going down the road. You don't have to stop unless you decide to.
Things are different with the 5th wheel. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the liveablity of the Love Shack. BUT, we run at a slower pace, you have to pull off the road to potty or cook; and, the small(ish) fuel tank in Big Red means we are going to stop at least every 200 to 250 miles for fuel. So, when we are trying to cover miles (like across west Texas), we try to "multi-task" each stop: food, fuel, and potty.
We have a spot that we generally stop, a little better than half way across west Texas. We got a reasonably early start today, breakfast a Mickey D's, had fueled up when we stopped yesterday - we were making miles. Our "usual stop" was going to happen around 2:30 in the afternoon... I decided to press on.
There is essentially one town between that stop and El Paso, and it ain't much. The weather was decent, Big Red was purring, little Izzy was purring... Joan plugged in an RV park on the Texas/New Mexico border. We were going to miss the first half of the SuperBowl... but, it was one less day that we'd have to spend crossing this area. Let's roll!
Some of you may recall our "2/2/2 Rule"... travel 200 miles, stop by 2:00 in the afternoon, and if you aren't stopping for 2 nights, have two drinks. ;-) 500+ miles today, nearly 10 hours on the road. We got in to see some of Beyonce's half-time performance and the last half of the game.
West Texas in one day - wooooohooooo! ;-)
