Flip top...

The heat and dry air is having an effect... the windshields we ordered for the scooters have been back-ordered, so we needed something for some protection for our faces.  We called around to motorcycle and accessory dealers in the area to find some face shields for our helmets.  You would think that would be a stocked item... well, I thought that would be a stocked item.  We checked with a half dozen places before we found one that has them.  "Hold those, we'll be down this morning."

It was a warm start to the day, obviously going to be into the 90s today.  We planned to start out early, but got sidetracked by a discussion with our new summer employer.  We are committed... or, should be.

We barely made it to the motorcycle shop before noon... the shields they had were just what we were looking for...

I wasn't sure how a shield was going to work on a half-helmet, but it isn't bad.  They rachet from the front of the visor, so you can raise or lower them.  There is a slight trade off at speed: we get the protection from that hot wind, but there is a bit more wind noise.  I'm considering this a good option; one that will be even better when the back-ordered windshields come in - that should direct the wind to the top of the helmet.

We didn't have a destination in mind today, so we rode into the wind, with the wind, and a bit of crosswind... yep, the shields are going to help.

We stopped for lunch at in In & Out Burger... good timing: a bus was parked in front of the place... and it was full of teenage girls, some sort of sports team.  I think it was the High-Pitched Screaming Team competition, and these girls were obviously in the playoffs.  The noise level dropped appreciably when the bus loaded up.

Bellies full, new shields - we were ready to roll.  North and then west.  We drove through Verrado once again (and this time I spelled it properly, with 2 "r"s.  As we rolled through that little community, my fuel level began to flash: time to gas up!

No idea how far we can go once it starts flashing, but it was about 7 miles to the nearest gas station.  We made it with ease, and calculated this tank.  Same distance for both of us again: 132 miles.  I used 1.26 gallons, Joan used 1.16.  My miles per gallon on this tank: 105 mpg; Joan's: 113 mpg.  I am amazed and delighted!

At a stoplight, a guy rolled down his window and asked... yeah, we know what they're going to ask, now: how much, how fast, what kind of mileage.  I like watching their faces when I say, "A little better than 100 miles per gallon."  ;-)

We didn't stack a lot of miles on today - cashed it in early afternoon, in favor of some grocery shopping by air-conditioned car.

Joan has an ambitious day planned for tomorrow: a festival in Scottsdale.  We'll see.
