The real story...
I made a joke about Cinco de Mayo a few days ago. Here are some real facts...
Many people think this day is the equivalence of the 4th of July (Independence Day) in the US. Nope. That would be September 16th. Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates Mexico's victory against the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Outside of the state of Puebla in Mexico, there isn't much observance of this date.
It isn't a Mexican holiday at all but rather an American one created by Latinos in California during the Civil War. Here's a link.
It is a bigger deal in the US than in Mexico. Of course, we have turned it into another "drinking holiday," like St. Patrick's Day... some have nicknamed it Cinco de Drinko or Gringo de Mayo.
