Ever wonder what Sturgis looks like before the Rally?

I did a short video while riding down Main Street in Sturgis today...

For those not familiar with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, it is HUGE!  (August 3rd through the 12th)  I've heard attendance estimates of 500,000 for this upcoming Rally.  Many of them will be jammed into this stretch of Main Street.  Many of the businesses along Main Street are now Rally related... not much for them to do the other 50 weeks out of the year.  That gives you an idea of how lucrative it is to have a Rally business here, and the earning potential of that two weeks.

Of course, the attendance is so huge that it spills out way beyond Main Street; in fact, way beyond Sturgis.

Not many motorcycles in that video (5, if you were counting).  That will change.  Some people think this is a "Harley Davidson Rally"... H-D generally does something major in Rapid City during the Rally, and has test rides in Sturgis.  That said, the majority of bikes at the Rally are Harleys.  But, even if 10% of the attendees are on other brands, that is 50,000.

There should be room for a Vespa.  ;-)

The McDonalds in Sturgis has a wall mural of a picture I took on Main Street in 2005 during the rally. Thousands of bikes are parked 4 across as far as you can see.

Years ago, we used to shoot and process "the official" (Rally logo) crowd shot each day. The number of bikes and people is astounding. I'll have to get in that McD some time to check out your photo, John.
