"Did you see that guy? He has a camera on his helmet!" Yeah, it was a bus tour. ;-)
Another absolutely beautiful early fall day in the Black Hills; we headed out earlier than usual...
A quiet morning in Keystone...
We stopped for breakfast at Peggy's in Keystone, a "down home" kinda cafe. A stop at a t-shirt shop to get me an "official" Iron Mountain Road t-shirt, then heading for Iron Mountain Road...
I had mentioned in a previous post "Mellow Time," and how the touristing families have gone home... yep, they have been replaced by older couples driving slow. I had also mentioned how the roads are especially clogged during the Sturgis Rally... yep, but that traffic moves right along. No so with the cars on the road currently. But, we were patient and most of them eventually turn off at a scenic point or a pull-out; plus, we aren't on a schedule... but, it is more fun to ride the bikes at a brisk pace.
Coming out of this tunnel, I heard the guy holler the title to this post...
I'm guessing these folks haven't seen an action cam on a helmet before. They were crowding around the opening to the tunnel to get photos of Mt Rushmore on the far side of it.
Still plenty of motorcycles enjoying the roads, too...
Notice the car in the photo below - yep, it is over the line. We see this frequently on Iron Mountain Road...
It is more of an issue when it is a car coming at you on one of the tight curves, like on the pigtail bridges. You have to stay on "high alert" on all the curves here, because some are so tight that you can't see that truck over the line until you are almost face to face.
We enjoyed the transition from Iron Mountain Road to Custer State Park...
There was a big bull buffalo in the trees when I took that photo above... missed him.
It was hard to ride through Custer and not stop for one of those great burgers there, but we were still full from that big breakfast. We rode through Custer, past Crazy Horse, then Highway 244 to Mt Rushmore. It has been quite a while since we have stopped there.
This is the first time we have been there this summer when the line for ice cream was not out the door. "Sure, I'll have some ice cream!"
We sat out on what used to be the observation deck to enjoy our ice cream...
I didn't get the ice cream in the photo above - HUGE portions. And: tasty! It was getting to be a warm day, so the ice cream was refreshing. Plus, we learned that Thomas Jefferson had the first recipe for ice cream in America - it was our patriotic duty to enjoy some!
Some walking around a bit...
Back to the bikes. Joan said she wasn't ready to head home, yet, so we ran Iron Mountain Road again!
As we approached the first tunnel on Iron Mountain Road we saw this...
At the front of the traffic in the photo above is something I haven't seen before: a rental pickup camper. The woman had gotten out of the camper to see if it would fit through this tunnel. Look close in the photo below - the camper is in the tunnel...
Yes, it fit. This tunnel. There are more coming up where it is going to be an issue. In a smart move (but not an easy move), the guy did a 30 point U-turn at the end of one of the splits to go back the way he came. There are signs at the beginning of the road that warn people about the tunnels and give specific heights and widths.
We took the county road cut-off that goes back towards Keystone, then the fun twisty roads for the way home (well, back to the motorhome)...
We put the scoots on the patio and I gave them a bath - we splattered a bunch of bugs today.
Nice day - great riding! Our time here is getting short.
