Incoming!

Today is a scootin' day.  The weather weasels predicted a high of 87º, clear and sunny, light winds.  They hit it right on - one in a row!

We left the house before 10:00, and before the heat of the day.  Didn't get far before we had to stop...

The swingbridge was out.  We live on an island; the Intracoastal Waterway separates our island from the town of Port Isabel.  Our bridge swings open to allow boats passage... sometimes it is a small excursion boat and it is a short wait; sometimes it is a tug pushing 4 barges and it is a longer wait.  If you have to be somewhere at a specific time, you better leave early.  This was a short wait.  We did see some dolphins as we crossed the bridge.  (If my buddy Pat is reading this: you are on your own for fricky-dickie dolphin photos this winter, since we are without a boat.)

We had a first destination: out to the storage lot to check on the 5th wheel.  The highway to the storage lot has a 65 mph speed limit.  The scoots will do that, but 55 is more comfortable.  We squished a lot of butterflies and moths with the truck on the way home.  I saw the first one coming at me as I increased speed... like slow motion, it came right for me... splat!  Then again.  And again.  While I do believe the bugs had a death wish, they seemed drawn to my faceshield.  When we got to the storage lot, I asked Joan if she got whacked... nope.  Her faceshield was perfectly clear.  I am about 3 inches taller, but my torso is longer; I obviously sit higher above the windshield than she does.  Or, the bugs like her.

We checked in at the storage lot, then went back to check on the Love Shack.  Yep, they definitely had some rain here - there are streaks on the front cap.  It's going to take someone a lot of scrubbing/buffing to get those off... pretty sure that someone will be me.  We went inside - it all looks good.  When we're ready to pull her out, she will be ready.

From there, we took back roads.  This is why I'm interested in going somewhere that has interesting, twisty roads for the scoots...

Yep - straight as an arrow, flat as a board.  A 65 mph speed limit on this two lane.  Some agriculture to look at (stuff grows year 'round here): cotton, corn, sugar cane, citrus groves (oranges and grapefruit).  You don't see the water here, except for an occasional resaca.  The Laguna Madre isn't far away, though.

Riding into the town of Laguna Vista, you get a nice view of the Laguna (hence, the name).  Back into Port Isabel, then across the Queen Isabela Causeway, a 2 1/2 mile long bridge across the Laguna Madre, connecting South Padre Island to the mainland.

Time for lunch.  Today is Tuesday, and we all know what that means: that's right, chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken is the lunch special at Blackbeard's.  It's what we call "Grandma food."  Nap inducing portions.

We rode around the island; well, the developed part of the island.  The island is 35 miles long, with the best walking beach along the Texas Gulf Coast; only the last 4 miles of the island (the town of South Padre Island) is developed.

I always wanted to pose in front of the sign...

I took some photos of the area that I will post another time.

A stop at Wally World before heading home - the storage area under the scooter seats ate up 4 grocery bags.

The scooters made the day more fun!
