King Tides...

I've heard that term used in Florida, meaning: high tides that are "the highest" - they are predicable.  It is a naturally occurring event.  The term "king tide" isn't a scientific term, just one used by people to describe these higher than normal tides.  First I've seen it applied here.

From NOAA: Tides are long-period waves that roll around the planet as the ocean is "pulled" back and forth by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun as these bodies interact with the Earth in their monthly and yearly orbits.

In spite of Tropical Storm Nate moving into the Gulf, that is not having an effect in our area.  Northern Texas may see 1 to 3 foot surge as Nate get close to making landfall, now predicted to be just east of New Orleans.

We will have these king tides for the next several days, with the highest likely happening on Sunday or Monday.
