The Billy Joel concert was last night. At Chase Field, the baseball stadium here in Phoenix. I had to look it up: seating capacity of 48,000. There were a couple sections where they didn't sell seats because they didn't have a good view of the stage; lots of seating on the field (they did have the infield blocked off so no one could walk on it)... he filled the place.
Dan drove - he dropped Joan and me off two blocks from the stadium, and he and Steph found a parking lot.
Joan got in line for T-shirts...
The obligatory selfie...
On with the show...
He played his hits; he played some album cuts (they weren't all hits). He gave the crowd the choice on what they wanted to hear (with some obvious leanings). He brought out his guitar tech for the tour who sang Highway To Hell. He poked a bit of fun at "another piano player" (Elton John). He and his band (outstanding musicians) did a cover of the Eagles hit Take It Easy. This was our first "stadium concert," and it was a great experience. Steph said what we were all thinking: "That was worth it just for the encore songs!"
He put on a good show. Does he still have "his chops"? Hey, the guy is 69 years old, but he rocked it! There were a couple songs that were probably in a lower key than original; didn't matter. I don't think he has released any new material since 1993, but we were all there to hear the songs we know. He delivered.
Quite the night!
