Look! Up in the sky!

If you said, "It's a bird!  It's a plane!  It's SuperMoon!" you get 25 bonus points...

Tonight's full moon is a Super Moon, based on the fact that it is closer than normal to Earth.  In fact, each of this summer's full moons have been Super Moons.  According to the Farmer's Almanac, this is the Sturgeon Full Super Moon, based on Native American lore that the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

No, it has nothing to do with the Sturgeon Motorcycle Rally.  Yes, that is a joke.

Alternative August Moon Names:

Flying Up Moon is a Cree term describing the time when young birds are finally ready to take the leap and learn to fly.

Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe), Harvest Moon (Dakota), and Ricing Moon (Anishinaabe) signify that this is the time to gather maturing crops. Along the same vein, the Assiniboine people named this period Black Cherries Moon, referring to when chokecherries become ripe.

Yep, probably more than you wanted to know.  But, it is a gorgeous full moon if you have a clear sky tonight.  The last Super Moon of the summer, so get out there and howl at it!
