Psssst - hey, buddy - wanna buy a guitar?

I got together with my long-time friend and music partner, Mark, yesterday.  Besides bringing equipment that I will be using to play music with Mark and his friends (they get together all year), I brought some stuff to sell: two guitars, an amp, and two 12-channel mixers.  Mark has an account with Reverb, plus there's a bigger Craigslist market here... Mark will get it listed locally and on Reverb, I'll do the same on the guitar forum where I participate.

I took photos while he did some research on what similar gear is selling for.  Here's a look...

Taylor 522ce 12-fret (all mahogany):

Epiphone SG Prophesy (with Fishman Fluence Pickups):

Roland Street Cube amp:

Beringer 12-channel digital mixer...

Yamaha 12-channel analog mixer:

It wasn't all about getting the gear photographed and ads put together - we also enjoyed some time making music.  It is always a delight when Mark and I get the chance to play together; having done this since we were sophomores in high school, we really know each other's style and are able to pick right up where we left off.

GLWS (good luck with sale). The 522 would be tempting, if I were to ever buy another wood guitar. A 12-fret 522 was probably the single nicest Taylor that I have ever encountered in my local store maybe four years ago.

Hi Earl - TFWMGLWTS (Thanks for wishing me good luck with the sale). The 522 is a nice guitar; it hasn't seen a lot of playing time, as I bought it from a dealer (who we both know) and when I see it, it reminds me of what an asshat the guy turned out to be. Yes, I know: that is a bit harsh comparing him to asshats... I would like to publicly apologize to asshats everywhere. ;-)

The 12-fret is more comfortable and a warmer tone than the 14-fret version. I decided to "prune" some music gear that doesn't get regular play. I really like this Grand Concert size - same body size and shape as the 12-string I bought last summer. Another guitar sale the asshat dealer lost because of his mouth. I know what you're thinking, Earl: "Let it go." Yep. This 522ce 12-fret will be the last reminder of any dealings with the aforementioned a/h. Someone is going to get a nice guitar.

The GC/x12 body is the only Taylor size that I have never owned, oddly enough. I certainly get the mental taint on that guitar for you, knowing who sold it.

My custom shop Martin J-40 had to go after the company treated me so badly and repeatedly denied warranty claims for obvious manufacturing defects. They blamed everything on my poor humidity control because I lived in Alaska at the time. (Funny how several Taylor, multiple Seagulls and other guitars had no such "problems"). I have talked so many players out of buying a Martin based on my experience that it has cost them maybe 40X what the guitar sold for, in lost sales. I won't even accept Martin strings as a gift, much less pay for them. Ask me how I really feel....

I get it, Earl. For you and me, the guitars are a pleasant "collection" that we get to play on a daily basis - no need to deal with any bad ju-ju when there are plenty of options out there. All these years of playing, and I have never found a Martin that I wanted to bring home. As far as that dealer is concerned, I don't diss him publicly, but I stopped recommending him. I figure I steered more than a few people his way before his public melt-down; not to mention guitars I would have bought from him. I understand why he was banned from the Acoustic Guitar Forum. I had nothing to do with that - he shot himself in the foot on that one.

So, how do you really feel? ;-)

And for the record, the Grand Concert is my favorite Taylor body style; I am really enjoying the 652ce WHB Builder's Edition.

Since I really enjoy my carbon fiber Blackbird Lucky 13 (the same basic size as a GC) and I fingerpick about 70% of the time, it seems odd that I never bought a GC body. Having played Chris proctor's personal guitar, which was the design inspiration behind the Taylor Grand Concerts way back when, that omission is even more surprising. But by the time I was no longer interested in larger guitars and raw horsepower for performing and jams, I was also done buying wood instruments. Timing....

I understand that timing thing. About 20 years ago, a boating friend from Louisiana told me about this "new carbon fiber guitar thing" - he was talking about Composite Acoustics; he isn't a player, but he knew I was. Carbon fiber?? I don't think so. I coulda been playing CF years before I gave it a chance.
