Day 2 - On The Hunt...

Day 2 on the hunt for furniture.  Today, we went to American Furniture Warehouse in Glendale.  Steph recommended them.  Stepping in the door, it was a bit overwhelming - the showroom goes on and on.  Of course, that also meant there was even more to look at.

This place has their furniture nicely grouped - bedroom, living room, dining room, entertainment, kid's room, etc.  They had the exact leather living room set we looked at at one of yesterday's stops... for a couple hundred dollars less.  They had some nicer bedroom furniture, with dovetail drawers and nicely finished solid wood.  A lot more leather living room options.  A great selection of bar stools (for the kitchen counter).

In half the time we spent yesterday, we were able to look, decide, and find a guy (one of the many who asked if we needed any help, without being pushy) to write up the order.  An easy sale for him, and we wound up buying more than what we had tentatively selected yesterday.  As it turned out, it was less of a grueling situation than I expected... Joan was happy to have my honest input, and we worked together to select things that met with both of our approval.

The big compromise for Joan was going for living room furniture that had recliners - she was concerned it would look like a den.  What we mutually agreed on is nice looking leather that reminds me of the furniture we had in the living room of our house in Spearfish years ago (still the most comfortable of any furniture we've had - this should be very similar).

Our bedroom in the Texas house had so much built-in storage - there is a walk-in closet in our bedroom in this new house, but no built-in storage other than that.  We looked for bedroom furniture that would give us plenty of drawers/storage...

And as I said: other stuff that we didn't look at yesterday.  There will be other things that we'll need, but this made a big dent for us in the furniture situation.  We both left there happy with our decisions... that's the key in this furniture shopping.

Since Steph and Dan bought furniture at the same store, we arranged to take delivery at the same time.  It will be almost two weeks down the road, to get us through the walk-through, closing on the house, and some other workers who will need access to the house.  Joan and I had already agreed to be there for Steph and Dan's delivery (they will be working), so there is no extra time crunch for us.  Win/win/win.

We settled on black leather living room furniture years ago. We had a black cat and a Siamese cat, so no color was safe. We also had a gloss black grand piano at the time, so it made sense. Cat hair wipes off of leather easily, and they don't like to claw on it (unlike some of the first hand-me-down fabric furniture from relatives). Black is easy to color match regardless of brand or vintage. We did the same thing with two Ekornes Stressless chairs, now going on 30 years old and still working fine. They were expensive but what a value! You cna tell that we are practical engineers and not interior designers.

It sounds like the project is proceeding nicely, but it will feel good to relax one day soon and kick back in your new living room when your fingers are too sore from playing guitar in your new music room.

Hi Earl. I remember relaxing. As I recall, it was kinda nice. I'm told that it will happen again. Someday. I'm looking forward to that. Someday.

Yes, things are progressing. Just when I think: "we have that project covered," another project comes up. Having done this new house thing in the past, I know that making it *home* will take some time after the move-in.

Rufus is a hairy boy. I did not see any furniture that was blond, charcoal, and brown... something that would not show the cat hair. I have to admit that we did not pick furniture based on his fur... but, we did consider where he likes to sit and how comfortable his humans would be based on that proximity.
