World Championship Shrimp Cook-Off...

The 25th annual.  Right here in Port Isabel.  World Championship... where contestants are representing countries all over the wo... um, from Port Isabel and South Padre Island.  ;-)

It is a fun celebration, even if not representing... the world.  Restaurants vie for the honor of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place shrimp entrees.  There are other booths - some selling other foods, some selling stuff not food related, a play area for the kids, but the thing that brings us back each year is the music: good ol' rock and pop music by The Agency (I think this is their 18th year playing at the Shrimp Cook-Off).

A big crowd...

I am not a shrimp fancier, but Joan checked out the shrimp booths and made her selection (a bacon wrapped shrimp something)... I went to a booth run by the new meat market in town, and had fajita tacos.  We topped it off with my favorite year's supply of sugar and grease: a funnel cake.

We met friends Mike and M.J. there, and their friends Gary and Shirley...

M.J. is showing off the shrimp pizza she brought from home.  Urp!

The band...

They play all kinds of music: with two keyboards (one of whom also plays sax), guitar, bass, and drums, they are able to play horn band music (sax and keyboard doing the horns), 50's through reasonably current hits, and nice harmony, with all five doing vocals.

I guess I am getting old, because the music seemed quite a bit louder this year - it was hard to talk.

There are also performances from cheerleaders and dance groups from the local high school and middle school.  Just a nice local (but worldly) festival.
