Do I Look Stupid??

Yeah, don't answer that.

We woke up this morning to an absolutely glorious 62º!  No need for air conditioning through the night; it was peaceful and quiet.  Being on a different time zone, we were both up early and got ready to take on the day.  After breakfast and showers, while putting away the utilities, a guy came up to me and said, "Do you know that isn't legal in every state?" (pointing at our rig)

I lowered my sunglasses and said, "Do I look stupid to you?  We've been doing this for years.  Yes, we know where we can and can't double tow."

I guess that took him by surprise - pretty sure he wanted to spout off his brilliance, and shot down, he was stammering for something else to say.  "Does that V10 tow pretty good?"

"Yes, we researched it before we bought it.  Definitely up to the task.  Well, time for us to head out - you have a nice day."  I wasn't trying to be rude, I don't like being interrupted while getting ready to roll.

We swung into that same Walmart that looked crazy around the gas pumps yesterday and found an unoccupied end pump.  Eleven minutes to fill up - a new world record!  And ready to head north on this last leg before 8:30am.

Decent roads and a bit of cloud cover, making for pleasant driving...

Traffic was light - I think we saw about as many trains hauling coal as we did other vehicles on the road the first hour or so...

Then, sunshine...

Still a comfortable temp in the upper 60s, when we turned on the vent, Rufus took in the breeze and smells...

We stopped for lunch in Chadron, NE, knowing that we didn't want to get to our campground for the night before their check-in time.  Across the border into South Dakota...

As we rolled north, you could start to see the Black Hills...

"Rufus, look - we're getting close!"

Yes, it his excited.  So much so that he needed a nap after exuding all that excitement.  ;-)

Our scheduled arrival into Hart Ranch isn't until tomorrow, so we booked a night in an RV park nearby.  The folks here are nice, but this place doesn't have the paved sites and large grassy area between each site, like Hart Ranch.  We had to unhook to fit onto the site...

No big deal - we were planning to unhook the car to do a bit of running around since we are here early afternoon.  Tomorrow, about 7 miles to go to get to our real destination.  We allowed ourselves "a pad" in our travels.

Link to a chart on triple towing but as always, check current law. Go get them Cap, despite last year's adventure where the watch captain did not know his law, you are the hero of looooooooooog two rigs. Bob Jarrard

Hi Bob - We have used the Good Sam Campground Guidebook for a couple decades; it has a section on state-by-state towing regulations. If in doubt, contact any particular state's DOT. There is some ambiguity where it is stated "the middle conveyance needs to be a 5th wheel," meaning they don't want a ball hitch being towed behind a ball hitch (like a travel trailer). I understand that reasoning, because of the increased possibility of oscillating sway. With the SUV as the middle conveyance, it is not connected to the motorhome with a ball hitch. This was our situation in Arizona this past winter, where one Highway Patrolman understood the difference and another didn't.
