Happy Birthday, America!

A chilly start to Independence Day here in the Black Hills; 58º when I got up this morning, only supposed to make it to 63º for a high.

"How bad was it last night?" you ask.  Kind of anti-climatic after the hail yesterday.  The weasels were calling for thunderstorms, possibly severe, through the night.  All I heard were some light sprinkles.

An inside day today.  Joan made breakfast, we had some popcorn while we watched a movie (80 for Brady).  The plan was to make burgers and dogs on the griddle for supper, but the rain has been on and off.  A quiet Independence Day for us.

Our Fourth was quiet too, except for I hurt my back working on a failed lawn sprinkler after lunch and then still had to mow our huge yard. Gonna be really sore today. It was a pleasant 86° with light winds. (Never thought I would say that 86° was *pleasant*. I have lost my Alaskan climatization for sure).

Last night really freaked out the cats. Both cats just cowered under their respective beds with us nearby trying to reassure them. Our neighborhood has always had an abundance of people shooting off huge illegal fireworks, and it was bad between 9:00 - 11:00 pm last night. These people must spend thousands of dollars on the "booms". Lucy finally went outside cautiously at about 1:30 am. Alice calls it "National Scare Your Pets Day".

We are fortunate that they don't allow fireworks here at Hart Ranch. Some nearby communities were going at it pretty good, but it was far enough off in the distance that Rufus didn't pay any attention to it. When we were in Friday Harbor living on the boat, the fireworks display there was set off in the harbor. We'd sit in the cockpit of our boat to watch it. Little Izzy wasn't upset by the fireworks or the noise - she'd sit out there with us to watch it. But, let a human laugh loudly nearby and she'd run and hide. There were some "campaigns" on Facebook, suggesting that people spend the money that they would normally spend on fireworks for pet food to give to their local shelter - I liked that.

Sorry to hear about your back. Sorry to hear about having to do yard work. At our home in Texas, the homeowners dues (condo fees of sorts) pays for that. At the upcoming place in Arizona, the yard will be gravel, with drip lines to anything resembling a plant. I'm hoping that will be minimal human involvement. Hope your back heals quickly.

High yesterday was 63º. It was 49º when I got up this morning. My island boy psyche isn't used to that.
